Family Photos 365 – Week 7

February 12, 2021 – 43 of 365 – Nothing to see here–just two of my children pretending to be dogs and drinking their water from bowls on the floor. A very normal day.

February 13, 2021 – 44 of 365 – No joke, Louisa loves wearing her mask. When we are driving in the car, she sometimes yells at me to come back and put it on for her. At first I was concerned that she is turning into a weird pandemic toddler who doesn’t want to see people. But now I honestly think it’s just another accessory to her. And God knows this girl loves an accessory.

February 14, 2021 – 45 of 365 – Someone has a lot of little Valentines.

February 15, 2021 – 46 of 365 – A quiet moment in a quiet and CLEAN room–a rarity around here. I think if Julia were an only child, she would spend 95% of her time playing just like this.

February 16, 2021 – 47 of 365 – Julia started her zoom dance class a week ago and she did great. When class was finishing up, Louisa came downstairs with Jason and was absolutely in awe. As it ended, Lou whispered to me, “I wish I was Julia.” So, obviously now Julia AND Louisa are taking a zoom dance class. Though unconventional, it is just as adorable as you’d expect.

February 17, 2021 – 48 of 365 – If Jason comes down from his home office during the workday, he is quickly accosted by all the little people and dogs in the house. Have I mentioned that Jason is anxious to get back to the office?

February 18, 2021 – 49 of 365 – Naps on couches for children who no longer nap (Julia) – A+. Naps on couches for children who are supposed to nap in their cribs (Louisa) – F. Thankfully, by some miracle, I successfully transferred this cute little napper to her crib.

Family Photos 365 – Week 6

February 5, 2021 – 36 of 365 – I distinctly remember when Florence was Louisa’s age. I had a very specific idea of what her style should be and I loved dressing her up in little outfits of my choosing. That was fun. I liked that. That is not what is happening in these photos of Louisa or basically ever with any of my children anymore. I don’t know. It’s certainly different, but I kinda like it too.

February 6, 2021 – 37 of 365 – Does everyone with three children have this many stuffed animals? I feel like we need a bigger house to accommodate the huge quantity we have acquired. And once one makes its way into this house, God knows it’s never leaving because how am I supposed to put something in the trash when it’s looking at me with its face (not that my kids would allow this anyway).

February 7, 2021 – 38 of 365 – I think the days of group baths are numbered. It’s getting tight in there.

February 8, 2021 – 39 of 365 – My little mama’s girl–helping me with laundry, giving me love letters every day and generally being my little shadow.

February 9, 2021 – 40 of 365 – Eight!!! Florence is eight!

When I was doing bedtime with her on her birthday, I was trying to encourage her to read a book series that she hasn’t read, since she was re-reading The Boxcar Children for the second time. She turned to me and said, “You know how I am, Mom. I really like these right now and when I am really liking reading something, I’m not going to stop.” And yes, I do know how she is. Although, that mindset does not just apply to books. It is a perfect metaphor for how Florence takes on life in general. This child knows what she likes, what she doesn’t like, what she wants to do, and what she does not want to do. I would be lying if I didn’t admit that this sometimes makes her challenging to parent (because….she has opinions) but I know it’s going to serve her so well in life.

A little instagram vs. reality. To say Florence did not enjoy posing with her balloons is an understatement. She got through it though with promises of TV paused, just off to her right.

February 10, 2021 – 41 of 365 – Miss Vi has become such an old lady and her back legs no longer really work. That means Jason spends a lot of time carrying her up and down the steps. The thing is, Vi is a very anxious dog and being carried is not her favorite. So when Jason goes to pick her up, she makes it as hard as possible for him, flailing her legs, trying to get away, and just generally acting like a nut. As a bystander who is not the one carrying and/or being carried, I find their interactions very funny. Neither of them ever seem to be quite as amused.

February 11, 2021 – 42 of 365 – Also known as the day I turned 40.

Family Photos 365 – Week 5

January 29, 2021 – 29 of 365 – Some days, I wake up to find that a party is being hosted in my house. I am informed of the dress code and often have some extremely uncomfortable evening attire laid out for me to wear, which I mostly negotiate out of actually wearing. Sometimes, there are multiples parties taking place on the same day, in different rooms. No one outside of our immediate family is invited, which cuts back on the festivities a bit, but the girls are undeterred. On this day, there were three parties–one in the living room that involved snuggling stuffed animals, another in the big girls’ room that involved dancing … and snuggling stuffed animals, and this one in the sunroom that was really just a bunch of bunnies dressed up in fancy clothes. I will say that I prefer traditional parties, the ones with people, but  I am constantly impressed with how these kids can make exciting days from nothing.

January 30, 2021 – 30 of 365 – We have acquired this pink bunny suit that was made by Jason’s grandmother back in the day. He wore it to be the Energizer Bunny one Halloween (the pictures are A+ material). It is now a part of our costume collection and Florence wasted no time in making it part of a normal day’s look.

January 31, 2021 – 31 of 365 – Pretty much every morning, Julia asks me if she has school. I’m not sure if she doesn’t know, or just likes the routine of asking. Anyway, when she found out that she did not have school this day, a Sunday, she decided she should play home school instead. One of her favorite class activities is to draw a picture and write a little story to accompany it. Julia dictates her story to the teacher, and then she practices her letters, rewriting the sentence below the teacher’s. Since we were doing home school, I copied these words down for her in place of the teacher, “Me and my mom are playing together and having lots of fun.” She is just the sweetest.

February 1, 2021 – 32 of 365 – My view as I made dinner. These two little piggersons, dumped the crumby remains of a popcorn bag all over the counter (and floor) and proceeded to shovel handfuls into their mouths. There is nothing like making a healthy home-cooked meal for your kids as they fill their stomachs up with junk right before your eyes.

February 2, 2021 – 33 of 365 – On Tuesday, we went outside to enjoy the snow. Louisa does not walk in snow. She is against it and will not take even a step, so she was over it within about two minutes of being outside. Julia made some snow angels and threw some snowballs, but then she too decided it was too cold and went inside to await the hot chocolate portion of the day. That left just me and Florence, who loves a competition. Instead of building just one snowman, we built two and she and I went head to head. In an unsurprising turn of events, I was declared the loser. Later in the day, after the hot chocolate and shoveling, we also went sledding. Thus, I completed all of my mandatory mom snow day activities.

February 3, 2021 – 34 of 365 – After nearly a full year learning virtually, Florence started back to in person school for the first time on Wednesday. She was returning to a different school than last year and many things about the whole experience are completely changed, but she loved it nonetheless.

Day 34 Bonus  – I am sure that there are lots of other small children who eat all of the foods that are ever put in front of them, but none of them have ever lived in my house. If Louisa had a catch phrase, it would be, “Can I have some of that?” with her pitch raising sharply in excitement at the end of the question. Here is a non-exhaustive list of things that Louisa has enjoyed eating: salad, oatmeal, eggs, crabstick, lebanon bologna, brussels sprouts, peas, sushi, smoked salmon, smoked trout, anything her sisters are eating, anything I am eating, anything Jason is eating, etc. The other day, inspired by Julia (who seems to have a phobia of not just eating dinner, but even sitting at the dinner table) Louisa declared she was not eating. I told her that was fine and she could just sit with us. Within seconds, she couldn’t resist the plate in front of her. She said, “Okay…I’ll try one bite.”  After the first bite she was unable to contain herself and shouted, “I love it!” Within ten minutes, she had cleaned her own plate and what Florence had left.

February 4, 2021 – 35 of 365 – These photos are not unposed. They are very much posed–these sweet girls, in the pretty light, with the gorgeous blanket made by Jason’s grandmother–and I enjoyed every second of taking them. I will be doing much more of this for sure.

Family Photos 365 – Week 4

January 22, 2021 – 22 of 365 – Florence’s school kicked off a week of kindness with the cutest socially distant parade I have ever seen. The roads around the school were temporarily closed off and the teachers lined the streets with balloons and signs, cheering on the students as they drove or walked by (all masked of course). That is Florence’s teacher there in the converse and sock monkey hat, so it probably goes without saying that she is super awesome.

I am so in awe of what the teachers have accomplished this year–going above and beyond to make school special and continuing to educate no matter how many curve balls are thrown their way. They are heroes and whenever things go back to “normal,” I hope we never forget that.

Day 22 Bonus – None of our kids have ever preferred Jason’s company to mine as babies/toddlers … until Weeza (as Jason calls her). He wanted to run some errands after he finished his work day, but Weeza cried hysterically while holding on to his leg to prevent him from going. Result? No errands were run.

January 23, 2021 – 23 of 365 – Just because you never go anywhere, and when you do go anywhere you wear a mask that covers 70% of your face, does not mean that you shouldn’t put on a little makeup. – My kids’ life motto. And the way they do makeup, probably best that 70% of their faces are covered.

January 24, 2021 – 24 of 365 – Remember two days ago when Jason wasn’t allowed to leave because Weeza wanted him? Well, just a reminder that every day is a new adventure with toddlers and just because they prefer one parent one day, does not mean that they will prefer that parent the next day.

January 25, 2021 – 25 of 365 – I have moved on from making clothes for my children to making clothes for myself. The problem with this is that while I can make clothes for my kids that are several sizes too big and say, “just giving her room to grow into it!” that doesn’t work so well with clothes for me. My solution to this problem is to make clothes that are rather of a “one size fits most” nature–just kind of a large sack-like situation. No fitted tops and certainly no pants. I’m considering moving on to something a bit more challenging, but let me level with you, this a sack-like top is my preferred style anyway.

January 26, 2021 – 26 of 365 – I got home from picking Julia up from school and noticed this cool steam pouring out from our dryer. By the time I had gotten my camera and went to find Julia to see if she’d pose for a quick photo for me, she had already stripped off her school clothes in favor of this nightgown/purse/headband look. This is her daily ritual. If Julia is at home, this is what she’s wearing. And if I want to wash that nightgown, she has already informed me that I better plan to do it while she is out of the house. So while I was a bit disappointed that she had changed at first, I quickly came around. In the end, I think this is the portrait that best captures her current self.

January 27, 2021 – 27 of 365 – My kid who doesn’t remember when masks weren’t a part of life.

January 28, 2021 – 28 of 365 – Do you ever have one of those evenings where your child is just miserable and the only thing that will make them happy is washing their hands for the next hour? And usually you’d fight the good fight, but it’s been a looooong day and you just want the screaming to stop so you can make dinner in peace. So you turn the faucet to a slow flow and just let it happen. And the next thing you know, 45 minutes have passed and your happy toddler’s hands are pruny and your four year old is pointing out that this is a huge waste of water, which is what finally shames you into dealing with the tantrum that results from you putting your foot down. This was one of those evenings. I regret nothing.
