Philadelphia Newborn Photography

At Home and Around Philly with This Sweet Family

I caught up with this family in early December after their second little girl arrived. I originally met them a couple of years ago when their older daughter was just a tiny little newborn. It was so fun seeing how much she had grown and changed and getting to meet her sister. I also very much appreciate that their adorable pup is always included in the photos.

We started out the session in their home. I always begin at home with newborns and I love getting to know big kids at home too. Even kids who I’m told are shy seem to shine in front of the camera. They introduce me to their favorite toys and give me the tour of their space. By the time we headed outside, I think this little cutie had entirely forgotten that I was there to take her photos and thought I was her new playmate.

We walked around the quaint side streets in Philly and eventually ended up in Coxe Park. Now, any playground is great, but there is something so charming about an old school park – one that hasn’t been updated with all of the newest fancy plastic jungle gyms. This particular park has the most amazing retro metal slide that I was just a tiny bit obsessed with. Big sister went up and down the slide and had the best time swinging while her little sister just slept like an angel.

It really was a beautiful day. I had the best time documenting some of their first moments as a family of four. These are just some of my favorites.

An In Home Family Session

I photographed this in home family session on a strangely warm and foggy day in early December. I had so much fun hanging out with them and documenting these girls’ sweet little personalities. There were princess dresses, a tea party, and driving in a play car through the living room. How fun is that?! Honestly though, my favorite part was just talking to the girls. Big sister told me some stories and oh my goodness, I almost died from the cuteness. I don’t know if I like anything more than hearing a story as told by a three year old.

I still have so much to share and I am on it! It makes me so happy to go back and reminisce about these sessions that I loved shooting. It’s funny to think about how much these little faces have probably changed in the few short months since I met them. Hopefully these photos will help them hold on to the memories – when dressing up in princess dresses and making up stories about monsters in the backyard were the best ways to spend a day. Time just goes too fast with kids, doesn’t it?

Documentary In Home Family Fun

Have I mentioned that I love nothing more than a documentary family photo session? I think I have. I seriously think there is no better way to capture candid moments and kids’ genuine personalities. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good posed photo, but these are the sorts of photos that feel like true little treasures to me – day to day, mundane life, frozen in time. In ten years, when so much has changed, these photos will be like little windows into the past. How amazing is that?

I photographed this family of five on a rainy day in September. I arrived in the early morning hours, in time to photograph the kiddos getting out of bed. It felt warm and cozy in their house, eating breakfast, playing games, and cuddling under the covers. After everyone was dressed and fed, we ventured out into the rain to explore the woods surrounding their house and an awesome tree house! With our little Conshohocken backyard, I had major yard envy. It seemed like an incredible place to grow up. I’m so glad we braved the rain to capture a bit of that.

I have so many more wonderful sessions to share from a busy fall session, but this feels like a really good place to start.

Philadelphia Extended Family Photography | The Whole Family

This extended family session, from a few months ago, is one of my favorites. We met up in Philadelphia at one of their homes and it felt so warm and relaxed from the start. Everyone sat around on the floor, with the kids of course being the center of attention. There was food, conversation, and lots and lots of laughter.

I love documentary sessions, and shooting in this style has really made me fall in love with multigenerational sessions. To be honest, I used to struggle with large family shoots like this. Making sure everyone was looking happy in the group shots, capturing enough of each family member; it felt overwhelming. But being able to capture an entire family candidly, changed that for me. Now I think there is something even more special when the whole extended family is included in a session.

On this day, there were so many wonderful moments to capture of everyone just being together. We headed outside into the city for a few more traditional posed photos, but my favorites are undoubtedly those that I captured in the in between moments. I loved seeing the grandparents play and cuddle on the floor with the grandkids, the excitement of cousins as they were reunited, and the raucous rounds of board games – from both the kids and adults. It was a joyful, happy day and hopefully these photographs will help them all to remember that day forever.
